DUO ALTERITY

Renowned for their “beautiful, expressive, hauntingly evocative” performances (Phoenix Classical), Duo Alterity is redefining the flute and guitar ensemble.

The multi-award-winning ensemble is recognized for their innovative and carefully curated programming. Their concerts feature unique interpretations of established repertoire alongside explorations of newly composed works.

The Duo has performed at numerous prestigious venues including Carnegie Hall, the DiMenna Center for Classical Music, and the Bushnell Center for the Performing Arts. Through their residencies with Connecticut Summerfest Contemporary Music Festival, they collaborated closely with emerging composers to present six world premieres which expand the boundaries of the genre. Duo Alterity is honored to have performed the world premiere of La Perla del Pico by late virtuoso guitarist and composer Frank Wallace.

Inspired by their shared understanding of alterity, they strive to present interpretations which allow the music to truly speak for itself. The result is a dynamic, expressive and constantly evolving musical voice emerging from two passionate musicians.

The level of accuracy of ensemble is astonishing…
— Fanfare Magazine
  • “Allison Hughes is as agile a flutist as one could wish for, with a fine tone and a lovely feeling for the long line (and the breath control that that implies.) Add Joseph Van Doran’s rhythmic strength dynamics subtlety, and technical precision, and you have a duo whose partners were obviously meant for each other.”

    Fanfare Magazine

  • “…beautiful, expressive, hauntingly evocative… great clarity of line & texture… real expression in the performance…”

    Phoenix Classical

  • “Duo Alterity brings a level of authenticity and emotional connection that is inspiring. The pieces are vibrant. The listener gets the sense that the performers really ‘own’ the music and are playing from a place of passion. One is immediately drawn into the narrative of the compositions.”

    The Guitar Journal

  • “Allison Hughes’s flute sound is nicely malleable, adjusting to the various moods Piazzolla conjures, with Joseph Van Doran subtle and rhythmic on the guitar. The level of accuracy of ensemble is astonishing…”

    Fanfare Magazine

  • “Duo Alterity is one of the most captivating chamber ensembles... They excel in performance and in connection with their audience in compelling ways. A Duo Alterity concert is a delight to experience!”
